Guttering, fascias and soffits
A leak at the eaves may involve a blocked outlet, a failed joint, poor alignment, damaged roof edges or tired supporting boards.
Ask about roofline work · Report an overflow
Gutters collect rainwater from the roof and carry it to outlets and downpipes. Fascias support the roof edge and often the guttering; soffits close and protect the underside of the eaves. When one part fails, the others should be checked rather than treated as unrelated trim.
Gutter problems
Common symptoms include:
- water spilling over one point during rain;
- dripping from joints or stop ends;
- a gutter pulling away from the fascia;
- staining or algae on the wall below;
- water running behind the gutter;
- a downpipe that discharges poorly;
- repeated overflow despite recent clearing.
A blockage is common, but alignment, outlet size, bracket spacing, roof discharge and downstream drainage can also matter.
Fascia and soffit condition
Peeling coatings, soft timber, open joints and loose sections can show that local repair or wider replacement needs considering. Covering unsound timber with a new surface does not restore the support beneath it.
Soffit areas may also be involved in roof ventilation. Replacement should not close intended airflow or disturb unknown materials without proper checks.
Look at where the water goes next
A repaired gutter cannot perform properly if the downpipe or gully is blocked. Surface water should be directed to a suitable point without saturating the base of the wall or flowing across a path.
Repair or replacement?
A sound system with one failed seal, outlet or bracket may suit a local repair. Replacement becomes more likely where sections are distorted, brittle, poorly aligned, undersized for the arrangement or attached to failed boards.
Colour and profile matter where new sections must join existing work. Mixing incompatible components can create another leaking joint.
Access and safety
Roofline work is work at height. A quick job does not automatically make an unsecured ladder suitable. The access method depends on height, duration, ground condition and the need to use both hands.
Questions about roofline work
Why does the gutter only overflow in heavy rain?
Debris may restrict the outlet, but capacity, roof area, alignment, downpipe flow or an undersized connection may only show up when rainfall increases.
Can a leaking joint simply be sealed?
Sometimes a seal or fitting can be renewed. Sealant smeared over a moving, dirty or misaligned joint is unlikely to be a durable repair.
Should fascias be replaced before new gutters?
The supporting board needs to be sound. If it is damaged, repair or replacement should be planned with the guttering rather than fastening a new system to weak material.
Can staining below a gutter be a masonry problem?
Yes. Repeated overflow may damage mortar or coatings, while open masonry can also admit water independently. Both areas may need checking.
Send a rain-time photograph if it is safe
