Why paving moves
Causes can include inadequate bedding, poor compaction, water washing material out, roots, frost, heavy loading, weak edges or changes to the ground. The repair should address the cause that can reasonably be corrected.
Lifting and relaying
Units are lifted carefully where reuse is intended. The area beneath is cleaned out and rebuilt with suitable support, while finished levels and falls are checked against doors, walls, drains and surrounding paving.
A small repair should join the existing pattern without creating a new trip edge.
Porcelain, natural stone and concrete slabs
Different materials need different handling, bedding and jointing. Porcelain requires full, suitable support and careful bonding; calibrated natural stone varies in texture and thickness; concrete slabs can become brittle with age.
The existing material and construction should be identified before choosing the repair.
Rainwater and falls
Relaying should not direct water towards the building or block a drainage route. If the original layout creates recurring standing water, a local patch may not solve the wider problem.

Can the existing slabs be reused?
Often, if they can be lifted without damage and remain sound. Matching replacements may be needed for broken units.
Will new jointing stop movement?
Jointing cannot compensate for weak bedding, a failed base or unsupported edges.
Can one puddle be removed by lifting a slab?
Sometimes, but the surrounding falls and outlet need checking. Raising one area can move the water elsewhere.
Does all cracked paving need replacement?
Individual units may be replaceable. Widespread cracking can indicate movement or loading beyond the surface.
