Watch where the water escapes
A rain-time photograph can show whether water:
- spills over the front edge;
- leaks through a joint;
- runs behind the gutter;
- pours from an outlet connection;
- backs up from a downpipe;
- collects in a sagging section.
Only take photographs from a safe position. Do not climb during rain.
Blockage, alignment or capacity?
Leaves and debris commonly restrict gutters and outlets, but repeated overflow can also involve poor falls, insufficient brackets, an undersized outlet, a restricted downpipe or a roof arrangement that sends concentrated water into one short section.
Clearing may solve a blockage; it will not correct a gutter that falls away from its outlet.
Joints and seals
Plastic gutter joints allow controlled movement and use shaped seals. Dirt, distortion, misalignment or a perished seal can cause leaks. Smearing general-purpose sealant across the outside may hide the joint briefly but can prevent it moving as intended.
The correct component and compatible profile should be used where possible.
Fascia support
Brackets need a sound fascia or other proper support. Loose fixings in rotten or failed board will not hold a repaired gutter reliably.
Downpipes and ground drainage
A gutter system is only as useful as its discharge. Downpipes, shoes, gullies and below-ground drainage should take the water away without saturating walls or flooding paths.
Questions about gutter repairs
Can only one leaking joint be replaced?
Yes, if compatible parts are available and adjacent sections remain sound and aligned.
Why does the gutter drip after rain has stopped?
Water may remain in a low section, joint or debris. Sagging and poor fall should be checked.
Does a larger gutter solve every overflow?
No. The outlet, downpipe and downstream drainage must also cope. Alignment and blockage may be the real issue.
Can gutter repairs be done from a ladder?
The access method depends on height, ground, duration and the need to use tools. A ladder is not automatically suitable because the repair looks small.
