Fencing repairs
A panel may be broken, but the repair only lasts if the posts, rails and ground connection can hold it.
Report fence damage · Read repair-versus-replacement guidance
G&M Property Maintenance repairs selected timber boundary fencing after storms, impact, local decay and ordinary weathering. The full run should be checked, because one leaning panel can reveal a failed post or rail beside it.
What may be repairable
- an isolated damaged panel;
- a failed or loose post;
- broken rails or individual boards;
- loose fixings and brackets;
- a gate that has dropped because support has moved;
- local storm damage where the remaining run is sound.
Matching component size and system matter. A panel forced between misaligned posts will not remain square.
Check at ground level
Timber posts commonly fail where air and soil meet, while concrete posts can crack or move if foundations fail. Vegetation, raised soil, trapped water and paving around posts can hide the condition.
Wind load and the whole run
A solid fence presents a large area to wind. Missing boards, damaged posts and open gaps can change how the next storm loads the remaining sections. The repair should restore a coherent boundary rather than leave one rigid panel between unstable neighbours.
Repair or replacement?
Local repair suits isolated damage with sound support. Wider replacement may be more realistic where several posts are decayed, rails are widely weak, panels are brittle or the line has repeatedly failed.
Ownership and neighbours
Confirm who owns or controls the boundary before instructing work. G&M cannot decide a boundary dispute. Shared access and plants attached to the fence should be discussed before removal.
Questions about fence repairs
Can a rotten post be strengthened?
Some repair systems may help in limited conditions, but a post with significant decay may need replacement. The surrounding run must remain alignable.
Can one panel be replaced with a different style?
It can be physically possible, but size, wind loading, appearance and compatibility with posts should be considered.
Will you remove plants from the fence?
Clearance should be agreed. Established plants can conceal defects and may be damaged during repair.
Can storm work be completed immediately?
Urgent loose sections are prioritised subject to availability and safe conditions. A temporary make-safe and permanent repair may be separate stages.
Show the posts, not only the panel
Send the full boundary, both sides if accessible and close views at ground level.
