Dry ridge systems mechanically secure ridge or hip tiles without relying only on mortar. Dry verge systems use formed units or continuous components to finish and protect the edge of tiles at a gable.
When properly specified and fitted, they provide a maintainable alternative to traditional mortar details. They still need the right parts and installation.
Signs of a problem
- ridge tiles that move or sit unevenly;
- missing or loose caps and fixings;
- verge units that have slipped, opened or detached;
- broken clips or poorly aligned components;
- water or pest entry at an unfinished edge;
- a system that appears mixed from several incompatible products;
- damage after wind or impact.
Match the system and roof covering
Dry components are not universal. Tile profile, batten position, ridge type, verge arrangement and manufacturer system determine the correct parts. Improvised screws through visible faces or mismatched caps can damage coverings and leave the edge vulnerable.
Inspect the support
A loose component may indicate a missing fixing, but battens, underlay, tiles and previous mortar should also be checked. Attaching a new piece to weak support does not restore the detail.
Repair or replace the run?
One damaged unit may be replaceable where the rest of the system is sound and compatible parts are available. Widespread poor installation, brittle units or inconsistent parts may justify renewing a longer run.
Access and wind
Ridge and verge work is exposed work at height. Safe access and the risk of falling materials must be planned. High wind can make the area unsafe even where the defect itself looks small.
Questions about dry systems
Can a loose verge cap be glued back?
The original fixing method and support need checking. Adhesive alone may not restore a mechanically fixed system.
Can dry ridge replace mortar ridge?
Often, subject to roof condition, compatible components and correct preparation. Existing mortar and support must be dealt with properly.
Why are the units not aligned?
Tile setting, batten position, incorrect unit size or poor installation may be involved. The whole run should be viewed.
Is ventilation included?
Some ridge systems provide a ventilation path, but the roof's overall ventilation arrangement must be considered rather than assumed.
