Dripping and leaking taps
A tap may drip from the outlet, leak around the handle or allow water to collect at its base. The likely repair depends on the tap type, cartridge or washer arrangement, condition of the body and whether suitable parts remain available.
A replacement tap may be more sensible when the body is damaged, heavily corroded, difficult to service or has already received repeated short-term repairs.
Toilets that keep running or refilling
Water continually entering the pan, a cistern that refills at intervals or a flush that does not shut off can indicate worn or misadjusted internal components. Water outside the toilet may instead involve the supply connection, cistern, pan connector, seal or another nearby source.
Do not assume the visible puddle identifies the failed component. Drying the area and observing when water returns can help.
What to send
Include:
- a photograph of the full tap, basin, toilet or cistern;
- a close view of where water appears;
- the make or model if visible and readable;
- whether the leak is constant or linked to use;
- whether an accessible isolation valve works;
- any swelling, staining or damage around the fitting.
Do not force a seized valve or remove concealed panels if this could worsen the leak.
Repair, replacement and access
Access to fixings and valves affects the work. A tap mounted behind a deep basin or a concealed cistern may require more dismantling than the visible component suggests. The scope should identify making good if panels, sealant or finishes have to be disturbed.
Gas and electrical boundaries
This service does not include boilers, gas appliances, gas fittings or gas pipework. Wet areas near electrical equipment may also require an appropriately qualified electrician. Keep away from wet electrical fittings and use the appropriate emergency route where necessary.
Questions about taps and toilets
Can every dripping tap be repaired?
Not always. Parts, access and the condition of the tap body matter. We will explain if replacement is likely to offer better value.
Why does the toilet refill when nobody has used it?
Water may be escaping slowly from the cistern into the pan, causing the fill valve to reopen. The internal components need checking.
Can failed silicone around a basin cause a leak?
It can allow surface water behind the fitting, but plumbing connections and waste seals should also be considered where water appears below.
Should I turn off the main water supply?
Only if there is an active supply leak and you can identify and operate the correct stop tap safely. Do not force it. If uncertain, explain the situation when you contact us.
