Visible water beneath a sink, beside a toilet or along accessible pipework may come from a supply connection, valve, waste joint, trap, seal or damaged section. Water can track along a pipe before dripping at its lowest point, so the wettest spot is not always the failed joint.
Supply and waste leaks behave differently
A supply-side leak may continue whether the fitting is being used or not. A waste leak may appear only when a basin, sink, bath or appliance discharges. Observing the timing safely can help identify which part needs attention.
Do not repeatedly test a known leak if it is damaging units, floors or ceilings.
Assess the surrounding run
A durable repair needs:
- compatible pipe and fittings;
- sound material on each side of the defect;
- correct alignment and insertion;
- suitable support;
- accessible isolation where required;
- enough working space to complete and test the joint.
A patch on badly corroded, brittle or repeatedly altered pipework may simply move the next failure along the run.
Hidden and inaccessible pipework
Leaks inside walls, floors or boxed areas can require controlled opening up. The route should be considered before cutting finishes, and electrical cables, gas pipes and other services must not be guessed at.
Making good is a separate stage and the area may need to dry after the repair.
What to do while waiting
If you can safely identify the correct accessible valve or main stop tap, isolation may reduce damage. Do not force seized fittings or interfere with boilers, gas appliances, gas pipework or electrical equipment.
Move belongings away from the affected area if safe. Keep people away from a wet or bulging ceiling.

Can you repair pipework under a floor?
Access, route, material and surrounding services need assessing. Controlled opening and later making good may be required.
Will the damaged ceiling be repaired at the same time?
It can be discussed, but permanent making good should follow repair of the cause and appropriate drying.
